For all the advise on how to create a low mainenance non CO2 tank, go to this website:
http://aquabotanicwetthumb.infopop.cc/eve/ubb.x and then click El Natural. Its Diana Walstad's forum and you can find all the info you need there. Basically you need do this:
1. Get a good base fertiliser, then top up with substrate (eg. Holland sand).
2. You must have sufficient light, not too much though, which normally means 2 to 3 light tubes above your tank. On them for about 9-10 hours a day.
3. Plant heavily with all sorts of plants. This is very important for the start to absorb all the ammonia. Have some floating plants also (very important).
4. Have an internal filter or a canister filter, not too powerful, and don't clean the filter at all until it clogs. (Also very important).
5. NO water change at all but top up evaporated water whenever needed with dechlrorinated water. Water change only once in 8 months to a year only to prevent salinity build up.
6. No fertilisation needed. You can dose some potassium and some Calcium and Magnesium if your water is very soft. If possible make sure your GH>7.
7. Feed fishes once to twice a day. This will provide all the nutrients for the plants along with fish waste.
8. Just leave it alone and watch, trim plants when needed off course

9. Enjoy! ;D My fishes got lots of babies already in this kinda tank.
