In easier way to to understand why using holland sand. coz holland sand just pure gravel without any fertilizer. Covering the base fert to prevent it to release to water. If you are just using the base fert without any gravel cover it on top. Then, the water will full of nitrient. Once the photoperiod is on, the algae will first grow before your plants. Beside that, too many base fertilizer released in water will kill some of your fishes.
