Those arowana, koi and goldfish easy to appreciate ler. They're big and mostly kept in bare tanks/ponds. They're all sparkly and colourful with 'endearing' personalities. Not many people here want to put on spectacles to search around the tank for the pair of apistogrammas they bought for a couple hundred bucks.
I think most of us who are full hobbyist got bitten by the fish bug since we were young, and considering the state of the local fishkeeping scene, is like one in a thousand lottery. I got into fishkeeping because I was mesmerized by the sight of a female guppy I caught giving birth in the horlicks bottle. If it wasn't for that moment.. I don't think I would be keeping fish.
It's a lack of exposure which is the reason the local hobby scene is small. Try to convince a colleague or a friend to keep fish and you'll see what I mean. Getting them to spend a couple of bucks on guppies is one thing.. but ask them to pay RM50 for a pair of apistos and it's impossible. Malaysians get more tight fisted with money the older they get. It has to start from childhood for most. With online gaming and etc being the fad with kids nowadays, I don't see the scene improving by much in future.
