Pool filter sand works great. There are many other sand types in the market that works equally as well.

Coral sand is ok - depending on the grain, it may or may not injure mbuna's mouth. For Peacocks & sand-sifting Haps, coral sand may not be suitable though.

If it's just Mbuna, you can also "get away" with gravel.
