Some livebearers are able to store sperm for later use. Are your fish guppies? Guppies come in all colors, are small, can have very large tailfins which are almost in constant motion, and the ones you find in petstores are not very expensive and therefore are often a first fish that people get being brightly colored. Actually, the female would have been the larger fish and the male would probably have been smaller with brighter colors and a larger tail in proportion to body size. Does this sound right? Could also be Platys, also inexpensive livebearers, but they get larger than guppies (greater than 2 inches).
