I would like to learn more about this but I think the major problem is the price and where to get them. Don't really see them around in local lfs.

Hi LTO,
Currently, Ranchu is judged from top viewing in Japan. If any changes in the future, we can't tell but definitely will update everyone in the forum if there's news about that. For some reason, people outside Japan started branding them "top view Ranchu" and comes "side view ranchu"...I guess that is solely for marketing purposes by breeders and fish traders. For hardcore people like us, we only recognize Ranchu and no others, and, it is judged from the top.
The price and availability factor is a major concern for many people who wanna get into the game. My group is trying to break that barrier and so far so good (after 2 years).
As you can see in the threads that we are getting eggs from our sensei in yearly basis and many members of this forum has got some of them from us. So, it makes the whole thing "extremely affordable" comparing if you buying it from traders and shops. I'd say we have smash the price to 10% of what it is worth in the market. Commercial people has been cursing us for doing so but we don't care what they say cos all we want is Ranchu players. To find more Ranchu hobbyist and create a strong community in Malaysia's Ranchu hobbyist. The price we set is mainly for us to recover our cost and WITHOUT any profit... we might be making a loss. But who cares? We are glad to see we have form a very good group of people in Malaysia who is entering the world of Ranchu. They are working hard and sacrificing their time and putting much effort to groom beautiful Ranchus. They precious the Ranchu they get as if they've paid thousands for it. When you can witness this, I bet money will be a secondary issue already. And, we feel proud of what we have done..... There's not only I doing all the work, there're many people, new and old members, behind the scene and outside the forum who has also put tons of effort to make it happen. They have put much effort to promote Ranchu to people.
And, YES, you are right that you hardly see Ranchu in fish shop cos it is suppose to be a seasonal thing. Japanese only breed their fish once a year. Normally, babies are available eithe rin March or April.... maybe May too... But, adult fish is always around.
Cheers.
