I bought 7 recently but only two survived. It's like what CC and Dom says, the traveling is a killer.
However, those that survive are guaranteed to be the strongest!

I use cattapa leaves to bring down the ph in my semi-BB tank for the bigger alts.[950liters]

I think our friend PiscesLim got some tips to breed altums from Horst Linke if I'm not mistaken.
Varied diet. Tall tank- minimum 2ft. low pH, low gH and lots of space.

Default Wow

So if I plan to keep altum I would probably need the following:

1. Big tank at least 3 footer (4 the best) custom made with 2 feet depth

2. Semi planted

4. Good filtration with low ph (around the range of 5??) and low gh..

5. Lots of cattapa leaf..

6. Damn lot of luck and advices from all taiko here...

7. Varied diet of BW, live food and ganules...

8. Pray a lot

Did I miss anything???

Hi Stan,

Did you buy the wild caught or F1 stock of Taiwan/German???

CC,

I would assume that is F1 stock available, it would be more viable compare to wild stock, I am talking about surviavl rate being better since shorter travelling and more hardy and adaptable to local water condition.

Am I right or too far wrong??

By the way, I notice in some pic certain altum show red spot arond the head and shoulder area while other pic don show that.

Is this red spot a signature of wild caught altum? or just some individual difference?? or strain difference??

If only we can lay our hands on those F1 batches. Altums are only commercially bred from Germany and there's not even enough numbers to supply the world. We have gotten them before, very good survival rates above 90%, but they are not cheap and not always available. Yes there are red speckles on some specimens. Can't tell whether its a geographical variant or only in wild ones. It's probably down to individuals only.

er... how do you relate that a with talking with a lady? Every time I talk to a lady, I only have "thoughts" in my mind.. Pretty sure I wanna do that with the fish? hehehe...

Prices for Altums will remain high... unless someone breeds it in quantity.

Corys? do I hear corys, ? We've got heaps dude... exotic ones too.

You missed one thing-Deep wallet. lol.

I got the fish from CC's pardner. Kevkoi It's F-X. Who knows where the fish comes from? Wild or bred? As long as it's alive and healthy and the fins are long and perfect![is that too much to ask? lol]

Not too much cattapa or you can't see your fish! You can skip planted if it's only going to be semi planted. Aim for a branchy driftwood setup instead. 4x2x2 is good.
Dry food you gotta train them and they are lousy learners!

Red freckles? It apears with age IMHO.

Default Deep ..

Ya...freckle that come with age sound logical...

It at least happen in human....maybe for fish too...

Deep walet is the one missing in my equation.....unless CC or KK had new batch of altum with "good" discount...

Semi plante?? I was thinking along the same line..drift wood with some plants planted in pots.....

Would it work??

I think you can get away with potted hardy ferns or sword plants.
A little light[eg, 2x36 phillips 4ft 865] short lighting period-4 hours daily on timer so that you can reduce appearance of algae.
In this case you need to reduce the blackwater. That will block light out needed for photosynthesis.

Side note: quite happy my alts are back to their piggy selves again.
