Went to XL and saw they have a tank of "wild angel" for sale RM68/piece and they are huge about 6 inches width... got red spot on the shoulder too...
Hava a feeling this might be more scalare than altum but ask the lady staff there she have absolutely no idea what I am talking..( she is cute though and I hope she don think I am trying to hit on her).... Anyone can confirm whether it is altum or scalare??

Wild peruvian scalare they imported a while ago. Exports out of Peru call their scalare "Altums", but there are no true altums in Peru (only Columbia and Venezuala).
U can get altums from XL by special request. Speak to Rock Lim (manager), but he will want u to take the fish the day they arrive straight out of the box. They will not hold the fish or take any losses. For the record, the price is pretty good, but the survival rate is abysmal.... and I mean REALLY abysmal. :S Try it if you think u can get a bargain, but my suggestion is to only buy altums that u can see surviving in a dealers tank for over a 2 week period to guarantee survival. Also for the record, it is not uncommon for importers of this fish to get over 90% casualties on these wildcaught altums. Seriously not a fish for the faint hearted. |

Hi Everyone
It takes considerable amount of effort to ensure low mortality rate for imported Altums. When you're spending big bucks to bring them in, it pays to give sufficient attention to what is required to adapt this majestic fishes to our local water. More often than not, this takes time. You may just feel fortunate that the fishes arrived intact in every bag (though this is rarely the case), but your fears are still not over cos there is an apparent risk of ammonia burn (if transfer fr bag to quarantine water is not done properly) and also columnaris which seems to be killing most of the altums, if not all. Such incidents are high in countries that import large quantities of wild caught Altums like America. It was said that wild scalare were found in the Venezuelan waterways and if you are told that the altum for sale is a genuine P.Altum from Venezuela, be cautious ! I guess it would be best to verify the breed through physical attributes than by area where the fishes were collected. Cheers Last edited by klkch1 : 28-10-2006 at 03:08 PM. |
