Hi Cruise Control. If you are referring to the office tank, I only use 1 bottle. I usually change after 10 days and use 2 cups of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of dry yeast with 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda.
The 2 feet tank at home which you see in the photos are using pressurized CO2 tank while my 2 feet moss tank also uses 1 DIY bottle. Here's a tip which may be helpful if you use DIY bottles. Mix your yeast with some warm dissolved sugar (1/2 cup sugar) in a cup first. The reason is to test if the yeast is still alive. After a while (about 5 minutes), when you have seen foam surfacing, then pour the whole solution into your dissolved sugar in the bottle. My wife taught me this. Apparently, it is a baking tip. Oh yeah, another useful tip. Never share sugar and yeast with a wife who likes to bake. Last edited by keatpek : 20-08-2004 at 10:01 AM. |

heads up to u bro...
u have a very beautiful tank there... Not many people were successfull with DIY stuff.... I was growing mini riccia and the normal riccia...harvesting them every week with DIY lightin and CO2.... but must say...it tends to float up after a while.... about the pix...there is nothing to do with camera brand...its all about the setting...learn up your cam...and u will use it better...but Olympus has shutter lag....ur shots tend to deviate.... anyway...keep us posted bro...

keat,
i notice on your tank info, you mention "Cheap substrate ". What does this means ?? you collect those substrate from the river ah Also the Fertilizer: Mg, NO3, K, PO4, Fe, meaning you manage to get this ingrediant individually ? can tell me where u buy them . Thanks |

Thanks Nix. Well, cheap substrate simply means that it is not branded. I bought it in loose form i.e. in packets of 1 kg from the LFS here. On hindsight, I think they probably got it from the shops selling flowers and plants and then repackage it. The LFS recommended it. I think I would try others when I finally set up a new tank.

Hi Kevin. You can get plants from Malim Jaya. There are a few LFS there namely Ikia, North South East West (same owner as the one near Waterfall), and also another one (forgot the name) with the picture of a big Arowana near a electrical parts shop (Mandarin called "Wan Loong"). There's also one at Paya Ikan, next to a car air cond shop.
There's a huge one at Muar which is not too far from Melaka. Apparently they distribute the plants and fish to the LFS in Melaka. Generally though, there's a group of people who are into this and we sort of know each other. Last edited by keatpek : 06-07-2006 at 10:22 AM. |

Thanks justtalk. I think there are many better scaped tanks than mine. I would love to move to bigger tanks but my wife will kill me. Been doing this since about 2 1/2 year now, I think. Never gets boring, when you get a bit tired of the tank, just move the plants around, and wallah, a new tank. |
