Littar, just visited Syarikat City yesterday, Their phone number is 79833214 or 79836366. Did think about buying their reconditioned CO2 units but after consulting Dom, I decided against it. I ended up buying the Aluminium CO2 cannister from Kheng Shin (also in Taman Sungai Besi)... cost me a whopping RM 500 but in the interest of peace of mind and good service, I went ahead with it.

Guys, you need to be aware of a few things before you happily buy those modified CO2 units. Firstly, all cannisters have a limited lifespan of 10 years, after which you need to check if they can still hold CO2 safely. Every single cannister in there is guaranteed OVER 10 years. The reason people sell off their fire extinguisher as scrap is because it has exceeded its safe lifespan. I didn't know all these things until yesterday mind you. If I did some mistakes, please correct me. Dom did manage to buy one that was only 2 years old so it's good for another 8 years at least. If you can find one at RM 150, good for you. Don't play play guys, these things can cause an explosion or kill you if there is no air circulation in the room.

Secondly, foam based CO2 and pressurised liquid CO2 has different cannister requirements (please correct me if I'm wrong). I noticed that fire extinguishers appear to have a thinner shell to contain the CO2 (which is foam based). I believe it's because there is less pressure requirements. Look for a similar sized steel cannister for pressurized liquid CO2 and you should be able to "feel" the difference in thickness. If you still insist on getting the modified fire extinguisher, choose those that are single piece, not those that have two halves joined together via welding.

On a side note, that guy in Syarikat City did claim that even after you die, the damn CO2 unit still haven't died yet. How's that for reassurance?

Anyways, I opted to buy from Kheng Shin. The guy there (Mr Cheah) is a very friendly guy and he is also a fish-keeping enthusiast. He was also thinking of planted tank but does not have the time to commit. So he's just keeping red parrot fishes. Prices are reasonable and he's also very helpful. You can mention my name (Kevin) and say I recently bought the Aluminium cannister from him. I'm sure he will give you a good price.

haha...of coz the metal piece is harder and long lasting than human being. but when it is rusted...the life span of cylinder will be shorter. If you accidently bang on it or drop on the floor. The pressure of the gas inside the cylinder will cause the death.

I was read a news from Taiwan. A lfs owner's father died coz of he accidently bang the joint of the co2 cylinder when he was trying to turn it on. The cylinder explored...the metal piece cut off 1/3 of his head n he died on the sport. The rest of workers nearby also injured by the metal pieces which was flying around.

klcmak, my tank is about 2.5 ft tall. It weights 13 or 14 kg and can fit +9kg of liquid CO2. Bought it for RM 500. Bought the electric dual-guage solenoid regulator for RM 200. It's pretty light if you compare with steel (the aluminium that is). There are lots of other sizes but I opted for the maximum size that could fit under my cabinet (it ALMOST couldn't fit!!!)

At once i talk to the one of the staff in a welding supply company, he told me that aluminium cylinder is not that durable, he said the top portion which attached with the fixture is easy to crack during refill...is that true?

Hmmm... could it be that he's trying to push his steel tanks? I'm not qualified to comment on that but I'm sure a quality aluminium cannister would have to meet certain safety requirements. That's also why I chose to buy from Kheng Shin as they are an authorised MOX distributor. MOX is a corporation that has a reputation to maintain. They will definately not sell you shoddy stuff at the risk of tarnishing their famous brand name. In fact, they WON'T sell you anything... you have to get it from their resellers... who will insist that you have your cannister rechecked every 5 years for safety reasons. Aluminium won't rust so the cannister will still be good after x number of years. Steel will, so the integrity is compromised after some time.
