Hey Justtalk. Getting into aquascaping I see. Like my shrimp tank set up, the riccia took about over 1 week to get going. Either the mesh was tied too tight or the lighting didn't get to the riccia.

The small PLC is what I'm using too. Just have to bend the arm closer towards the water (but not too much otherwise break). And angle the light so that as much light as possible gets to the riccia.

The size of the mesh is about the same as mine.

About the riccia melting, just give it some time. Patience. With enough light, riccia will grow. My tank is a 8 gallon and has 18w. 2 watts and a bit more per gallon. I get pearling but growth is just OK.

As for the floating bits, hmm... riccia is like that. Have to be rajin a bit to clear them.

thanks creep for the comment.... other comment are welcomed too!!

Will wait for a week to see if they starts to growth.... hopefully...
[I am not sure whether they will can last till then as the melting seems pretty 'teruk'. Also, my naughty suck-mouth fishes keep sucking them in searching for food pallet which dropped in between the melting riccia.... ]

My tank is pretty small @ 40cmX23cmX22cm @ 5.34 gallon. I will twist the arm of my PLC(I have total of 22W from two PLC-one 9W and one 13W) to closer to the water surface so that more light will 'go into' the water to reach the riccia at the bottom. However, that will make the daily clean up harder as I am using a cup to scoop up the protein layer on the surface everyday currently(and top up some water after that)....

humm... long waiting for my riccia to growth......

Not too close to the water ya. About 20 to 30 cm away. The PLC's light doen't give a very wide coverage. Just adjust the angle so that most of the light falls onto the riccia. That's the idea. Don't want any electrical accidents or lights falling into the tank.

yes... I added in 1/2 spoon of baking soda......

question on lighting:
so, if my PLS not efficient, say 22W PLS is actually equal to 15W PLL, can I make up the different by turning on the light for more hours?

I am currently on from 7am to 10pm daily for my 9W+13W PLS. My tank is at 5.34gallon which means slightly more than 4W/G.

4W per gallon is definately more than enough. I've tested my riccia, and they pearl even at 2W/gallon.

There must be a balance between CO2 and light. Too muc light and NO CO2, there'll be slow growth. Too much CO2 and too little light, slow growth too.

You need to find a balance point By the way, my riccia is growing under 1.5W/Gallon w DIY CO2. Horribly slow though. After 2 weeks, it grew only like 0.7cm haha. But I'm a patient guy

Whereas, in my other tank (2W/Gal and Cylinder CO2) after 2 weeks, it grew about an inch (4 times growth rate).
