Kay, what kind of filter are you using? What is the flow rate? How long is your photoperiod? Hair algae grow due to CO2 and lighting imbalance + strong flow. Reduce the photoperiod to max of 8 hours. If your current photoperiod is 8 hours, then reduce it to 6 hours. Slow down the flow a bit.

Check your PH, KH and temperature. If the yamato died in an hour, mean your tank water not yet stable. Is this your new tank?

You gonna remove this algae manually by using your fingers or using the tooth brush. Only young yamato and SAE will eat.

Siamese algae eater is not the orange color. The orange color is the chinese algae eater. Make a search in this forum about the different of chinese algae eater(CAE), siamese algae eater (SAE) and flying fox. Flying fox look almost the same like SAE.
hei bro dom... im using the BOYU submersible filter, flow rate is 150L/h, what's photoperiod ?

i also suspect my PH, KH level is not right, as around 3-5 cherry shrimps died too.. the temperature is around 27(noon), 20-23(night)...

i tried removing the algae manually, its hard as the leaves, from the java moss will come out together.. it sticks very hard to the surface...

btw, could i just get a couple of flying fox to eat the hair algae ?

and would u guys think that i should get the disposable CO2 can, once every month ? around rm12... instead of the DIY CO2

rose barbs will eat hair algae and i do think that you need to fertalize. without fertalizing you will experince bad cases of algae attacks.

Photoperiod the time frame of lighting which you turning on.

Disposable CO2 can is the same the DIY CO2. Why you can't just get a CO2 cylinder? Because disposable CO2 is much more expensive the CO2 cylinder if you running it for long term.

Wow...where are you from? The temperature at daytime and night time so much different? You can try the flying fox or SAE. Remember get the young and small one. Coz the adult flying fox or SAE won't eat any algae...

Rosy barb eating hair algae? Emm....I never try those. Perhaps you can give it a try.

oh.. in that case.. the photoperiod is set to around 8-9 hrs a day,

isnt the disposable CO2 can PURE CO2 ? or is it the yeast method ? how much is the CO2 cylinder ? isnt it kinda costy ?

so happen this aquarium is in my room, aircond's on at night.. so... if i blast the aircond, the temp would even go as low as 19ºc...

i bought two flying fox just now... around 2.5cm in lenght

since i have shrimps in my tank, should i use chemicals (dunno what kinda chemicals) to get rid of the hair algae ?

im testing the PH level now ... the results = PH 7.5 - 8.0

err.. is that a bad thing ?

PH is kind of high. Check on Aqua Journal and those books/magazines. I can said most of the beautiful setup with the highest PH is 7. The best is 6.6-6.8..

Not sure about the brand of disposable co2 you are going to use.

The water is not stable as Dom says. There might be a chronic problem like something leaching toxins into the water.

i have similar problems a week ago. i think it is due to my filter suction got blocked by leaves etc. dump in 6 SAE's. at first they just lying there do nothing. after a few days, it is clearing up. right now left with few long strands of hair algae. i guess there are not eating the long ones. need to pluck it by hand i think.

yamato are able to survive in PH 7.5. But you need to check the PH of the water from the lfs where you bought your yamato. Try to put some tank water inside the plastic bag and place the whole plastic bag inside your tank for 30 mins. It will help to get yamato to get use to your water. (Do this for fishes as well.)

So far i saw Pet Family, Fish Paradish and 88 selling it.
