Default Lighting

I have a simple question about lighting.
i see bulbs in the fish shops ranging from 10 to 20 dollars.
can i use a flouresent shop light (standard) home depot bulb to feed light to living plants?

its 45 watts, and has all the specs of a fish light you read about on line.
and if the answer is no, then why and why not?

Thank you fish experts for any kind of reply..

Shop lights are fine. Make sure the bulb is rated at 5500 K or more. Get something with the most lumen output if you have the choice. Lesser K values normally produce yellowish light which may not be suitable.

5500K still yellowish and able to grow low lighting requirement plants. You need to have 6500K-8000K to grow other nicer plants. And low lighting requirement plants will grow as well. ADA lighting tubes and bulb are all 8000K.

About the Watt, try to make it 3W per US gallon. If you have high lighting requirement plants, then you might need to have around 4.5W per US gallon.

Must between 6500K - 8000K. What if 10000K, suitable for plants?

Hi,
I think you can plant stuff with the GE 9325 bulbs or it's equivalent...i presume you can get this brand where you stay. important thing is the effective PAR emmited by the bulb. the 6000-8000K range is good as highlighted by members.

i understand exactly why pay so much for something that if mass produced will be as cheap as shop lights. it is becoming so.

10,000K is no problem. But then the Watt will be as high as 150W. Saw my MH at home? That is 150W and 10000K. So, you need a chiller to chill the tank water.

dom, my mh 70W runs cooler than my 80W fl's...the casing is hotter...
with the 70 Wmh, i'm using less power...saving at least 28% from previous setup using 220W fl. now only 70+90W
