From the look of it, IMO the sand is too big/ rough. Usually are suggested to use Holland Sand, the size is smaller and smooth edge.

Well, if you got more budget, you can get ADA, JBL or Sera.

For me, low budget, I just used Holland sand.

If you're on a budget, then i'd suggest do what I do and use a layer of cheap loam/laterite as the base. Cost RM5 per bag, and you only need about 2 bags to fill a 4 footer. The thing with the gravel you are using is there's no nutrients in it, and it certainly helps growth to have a rich base substrate which also encourages plant to root.

Water Lily loam is safe to use in aquaria and i've successfully grown plants in just sand and water lily loam. The gravel you're using is fine, but will be a bit difficult for smaller plants like Glossostigma elatinoides to root and spread. If you intend to grow plants of the Echinodrus family, water lily loam and that gravel you have will be enough to grow giant specimens in no time providing you have enough lighting and co2.

If you need to know where to get some loam, let me know.

Wink

If just want to use gravel such as small stones is alright in aquarium. I know some people they r scared of cloudy aquarium even just after setup. Another way is not to use any kind of soil. Just go and buy those pellet which u can stick into the gravel such as Tetra Initial Sticks. It contains high Iron, which is sufficient for most aqua plants for start. It also come together with a few pills which enrich the growth of the plants root. It is not expensive too, cost around RM10, which last very long too. But of coz, don compare this solution wit the effect of soil for healthy aqua plants growth. It is still better to invest in good aqua soil, to get the best growth provided tat ur budget is there.
