Hi everyone, i am an aquatic plant lover staying in JB/S'pore. Anyone of you come from JB?
My favourite forums on planted tank: AquaticQuotient(S'pore) Tonina Forest(Taiwan) Aqugrass(HK) IMO, the standard of aquascaping in Malaysia still far left behind Japan, Germany, Taiwan, HK, S'pore...... so i think we have to learn something from them. Had Tonina sp appear in the FS of KL/Penang already? ![]() ![]() Tonina sp from Belem.

FYI, when Tonina sp was firstly introduced into Singapore, the price was about RM 100 for each stalk (Yes!, it is stalk , not pot!), nowadays the price had been reduced to S$2 (RM4+) for each stalk. However, i must say the plant is really demanding if you can't create stable and low pH (5-6+)and kH (2-3)tank environment for them. Most people in Taiwan, Japan, HK, S'pore use ADA aquasoil (esp the ADA Amazonia aquasoil) to achieve low kH and pH water parameter.

Tonina is hard to get in KL, but 88 Marine lfs may have it. If I'm not mistaken, I've seen them in their display tank b4. That was quite long time ago. Aquascaping is not popular in Malaysia but by no means they are of low standard. I wouldn't say that Marine 88's planted tanks are the best but they certainly have standards comparable to those in Singapore and the likes. They do sell Tropica plants (no longer though) and Dupla products. But because the market is not there, lots of these products are no longer in sale. They emphasize more on the cheaper products from Taiwan. I must admit that Singaporean have much wider choices of plants as I get some of my plants from Singapore as well... places like Pasir Ris.
With you joining our forum here, Alfa, I reckon you can share some of your thoughts and advice here with us. I'm also a member of the AquaticQuotients and the APD although no longer an active member there. Quote:

hi hemiolopterus,
I used to have a 2ft planted tank + DIY CO2 when I was working in SG... and harvested lots of ricca to give away then.... I sold most of the big items and only kept the eheim canister filter. I'm back in KL and was thinking of starting back my old hobby... Visited both LFS in DU & 88marine... 88marine's have pretty good accessories for planted tank. I am planning to setup a 4ft tank. Last time I did not have basefert at the bottom of the aquarium... I asked the people at 88marine... they told me that I need like RM90 worth of base fert and RM90 worth of fine gravel... Of coz for lightning... need like 1 X 2 36WPL + 1 X 2 long tube FL... Any advise on the above mention items ?? No wonder there arn't many planted tank hobbist here la... I guess ppl get scared away when they see the price tag on 88marine planted aquarium... cost like RM4000 for a complete setup of 4ft with lights/co2/fert/co2 reactor / etc..etc Stanley |

Hi stan,
welcome to this forum.... the base fert is quite expensive in 88 marine. Try to get the JBL brand. It was rm 30 something per pack a few years ago ... hehe long time i never look for base fert cos i use peats and garden soil ever since ... As for the gravels, else where also the same price. 1 pack rm44 ..bout 20 kg ... you need 2 pack for your 4'. Interested to get the gravels from me or not? I sell you rm 60 for more then 40 kg. More then enuff for your 4'. I'm giving up this hobby temporarily. You can find some exotic aquatic plants in an lfs call East Aqua in Tmn Maluri. There's another specialised aquatic plants shop in USJ ... err forgot what's the name of the area already ... it was opposite a market which is near a shell station. In USJ 19 also got 1 importer/exporter which has exotic plants but limited choices. I saw 1 lfs in DU opposite the BP station has quite some choices of exotic plants but damn expensive. Not recommended to buy any. regards, Joo Quote:
