Hi everyone, Im new here.
I have a small tank where I put fertilizer ball all over the middle of my black gravel. The balls are around 5mm in diameter. The problem is that those fertilizer come up to the surface and I can see some of my prawns eating it. The sight of it is not nice neither. I recently saw some soil sold in some fish shop that suppose to have all the nutrient needed. I guess it might be the JBL soil that some are talking about. How does the soil works? Do i still need my black gravel? Some advice needed. Thanks in advance. |

Hi kayX, welcome...
If it is JBL soil or JBL Aquabasis Plus to be precise, the usage of this bottom layer soil (any brand of bottom layer soil/fertiliser, for that matter) as directly quoted from www.jbl.de website is : Spread AquaBasis plus in an even layer of about 2 cm thickness at the bottom of the aquarium (contents sufficient for approx. 100 l). Place a 4 cm layer of washed gravel with a grain size of 2-3 cm on top. Do not use any larger sized gravel! When filling the tank with water use a flat plate, a panel of glass or another flat object held under the water jet to prevent the gravel from chuming up and clouding the water. The aquarium can now be stocked with plants. As for the fertilizer balls that you mentioned, it is usually buried deep inside the gravel to prevent the kind of problem that you are facing.. Regards |

Hi nathan,
Thank you for pointing that out. As the direction how to use JBL soil is directly quoted from the JBL website, I too, at first think, it is mm not cm, but to think of it, it is maybe the maximum gravel size that anyone can use for the top layer of JBL soil. Regards |
