Default complete newbie to plants

Hey, i want to plant my tank but I dont know what type of plants I can get. I have been into fish for years and had one plant in an old tank of mine that went good. My new tank is a 55 gallon tank with a 40W 18k FL light. It gives off a purpleish light. I was told I could have plants with this light. Can somone list some good plants that I could use for my light set-up? Thank you!

invest in some lightings before you venture into aquatic plants, not before.

yea, never heard of using purplish lighting in planted tank. the best light source is the sun light... and is not purplish...

i believe you can get a new set of FL lighting. suggest you to DIY. or if you have budget buy those Aquarium units. but still i would just DIY. search the web, it contains a lot of information about DIY aquarium stuff.

dont forget about the substrate and CO2. for low tech plant, you can skip CO2.

Why not just get an Philips FL 865/36W? It costs only RM4.20. Or try Osram for better quality, 765/36W costs only RM7.90. Both with colour temperature, 6200K. If you have budget, try PL lights. Much better effects....

would this light: Odyssea 48" 130W Aquarium Power Compact Light & Bonus - (item 300131573187 end time Jul-25-07 00:35:31 PDT) be good for my 55 gallon tank? They are at my budget and seem to be nice. I have heard they are loud but it dosnt matter. Any input? Is 130watts enough? Thanks!
