Hi I am interested in glosso, but the ppl in Prangin Mall said I needed to use ADA that they were selling to grow this plant. Is that really necessary?
Also, are there anyone in Penang that can spare a small amount of glosso cheaply? Just for me to test it in my tank. Thanks |

It is depends on how thick or how tall you want to grow it. If you want to grow like those in Amano tank. 6inch thick. Of coz ADA bulb/tube is the best choice. Because it is the only bulb/tube came with 8000Kelvin. The rest of the lighting we can get from lfs or lighting shop are 4700Kelvin, 6500Kelvin or 10,000Kelvin, 14,000Kelvin or 20000Kelvin. Plants growing well in 8000Kelvin only.
But you can use those 6500Kelvin light tube/bulb to achive this result. Just that...you need quite a lot. If you want to grow it tall..like what we called it as glosso tower. (Mean it is growing upwards) Those low lighting will give you this result easily.

Thanks for the information. I am setting up a new 2 feet tank with beach sand(silicon sand). Is this okay? The bottom layer uses garden soil along with sheep fertz.
The reason i want to buy glosso from a member here is becoz the glosso in the shop don't look alrite, and Prangin was selling foreground plants between RM13 - RM25+ for a small container . Thanks for the info again. |

beach sand? it might too fine for glosso. what is the thickness of the gravel?
sheep fert is goal shit is it? beware of algae attack. you should start slow without the "shit" thing first. just have fun in the process of experimenting. do expect to have trouble coming out. Check out the thread by Ari call "my methods", is a long post, but it does have info on how to setup a planted tank using "cheaper" stuff than ADA. |

You can use the garden soil at the bottom. But your tank will take time to stable or mature. Once you pulling out any plants. The garden soil will just come out n explore inside the water. End up you will facing lot of algaes problem. You can use that sheep organic fert inside the aquarium. But wait till your plants are growing well. Then only insert it one by one inside the substrate. If you just put a layer of sheep organic fert under the substrate. And the plants yet to start growing n the fert will turning into ammonia/nitrite. Then kill all of yr fauna n flora inside the tank. Wait till your tank stable with bacteria grown. Bacteria play an important role inside the aquarium. It will help to convert the nitrite into nitrate for plants to absorb.

(I added water to tank with diy lighting) How do you combat this? It has white cloudy substances in it.... |

Change 20% of water daily till it is clear. Are you using Silica sand? If yes, advise you to change the sand.
