Use a 2 foot tank, fill water till 3-5 inch deep. Toss in a few floating plants and cabomba/elodea. Cover the top of the tank so that no turbulent air movement. No aeration or filtration at this time.

Put the male in the main tank and the female floating in a jar so that he can see her but not harm her. When the bubblenest is ready, release the female. When eggs have been laid(in 1-4 days), remove the female promptly.

When fries are free swimming(3 days after hatching), depending on your preference, you may leave the male with the fries or remove them male. You can then start feeding with infusoria/microworms, and then move on to artemia in a week. Personally, I just use daphnia from day 1 and still get large spawn. All depnding on your preference.

When fries are free swimming, usuallt I also add in a matured sponge filter. Also, add some fresh water every now and then to dilute the water till the tank is up to normal heights before I start to change water.

These are all just my own experience. There are different methods you can use...whichever works for you.

In my return to betta breeding this year after a few years absence, this is what I noticed.

A lot of betta nowadays seem weaker, more susceptible to disease and fin clamping, loss of appetite, etc.

Also, a lot of bettas nowadays seem much smaller when fully grown compared to just a number of years ago(referring to HMPK, HM, fancy coloured ones)

And also that a lot of bettas do not seem to be good bubblenest builders. I have only 4 out of 11 males that built good bubblenests.

one thing to relate about is the water temp and the surrounding condition.I think mainly lot of people didnt take much care about this. That is why bubble nest never came out. Have to make sure the water is in the right temperature and not much of *sudden shocking* environment.Mayb the bubble nest will come out very soon

That may be, bro Vincor...but this trait is also hereditary related to an extent, just like agression. I noticed the fancy bettas and the traditional old type bettas differ quite a bit in personality nowadays.

theres two type of beta actually. One is the fancy type beta while the other type is the short tail beta. fancy beta are just for display and not really suitable for dueling .The short tail beta are much more for dueling. One thing about fancy type beta is that fancy beta are actually home breed type, which means it is breed for display. While the short tail beta or not much fancy are the ones mostly caught from wild.Thats why that differs abit. Wild ones tends to have stronger endurance compare to the home breed which is alway safely and happily swimming around in your fish tank. That may explains abit why nowadays betas sold in LFS are much more weaker.Because they are mostly imports from thailand and other country. They were breed to display rather than breed to duel.To those who really wanted fierce betas,go for wild ones.LFS betas mayb train to be fierce but compared to the wild ones, it is still weaker. And also one thing about those betas cant create bubble nest is also depend on what u feed it.It is best to feed betas "life food" instead of "packed or flaked food".

hi ... any luck?

from my experiences, younger bettas might not have enough experience to breed.
- little bubble nest, try not to change water for sometimes ... it will help.
- mating shouldnt be a problem but sometimes will forget to pick up the eggs ... maybe too 'high' ... orgasm ...
- taking cares of eggs and newborn ... same like above, eggs and newborns drown ... use flat surface at bottom.
- stress ... he will wallop everything into his stomach ... so don't always disturb the eggs.

at the end, it's a joy and wonderful experiences for both fish and you!

The best thing to do before breeding them is to first well conditioned them.. frequent water change, feed them with bloodworms... for about 2 weeks. This helps from my experience.. when you see verticle bars on the female, it is time to mix them..

Default Betta breeding

Today I have tried to mate my fancy betta (long flowing tail) but the male is so aggresive, within 1/2 hour the female fins have been shreded like hell. How can you leave the female there for 1-4 days as suggested by kohaku she might end up floating upside down . So whats the length of time should you see they couple up? Angel or discus breeding are much nicer so peaceful.
