Hi,
I would to like to buy 8-10 Fontosa to start off my fontosa collection. Can any member tell me, 1) would it be better to start off with baby fontosa (1-1.5") or adult, I understand the growth rate is slow? 2) What is the current market price for Fontosa baby/adult ? 3) Fake/Genuine, I recall there are instances of fake fontosa, how to you distinguish them ? 4) Any contact or wholesales shop where I can find good Fontosa in PJ/Selangor/Klang?? Tks |

bro, pls go to the below link which can learn more about frontosa variants.
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/article...osa_corner.php 1) to me i prefer starts to rear from juv stage. for growth rate, burundi is the slowest, mpimbwe is the fastest. my mpimbwe grow from 1.5 inch to 6 inch in a year(alpha male).. 2) if refer to the common burundi at the lfs, price range is around rm15-25 for juv. 3) fake frontosa? me nvr seen before. did u refer to hybrid? i mean cross breed between frontosa variant. 4) u can call the ex-owner of Cichlid Connection lfs in PJ SunwayMas, he is doing wholesales now but still entertaint small volume order. Tks Bro Colin98,
Good information from the web-link you gave. What is your opinion. I am starting my aquarium collection, do I stick with just Fontosa or mix with other africa Cichlid. And for water filter system on a 4 - 6 ft aquarium, which is the most suitable system - power-head, traditional top placement filter system or others ? |

bro ari already helped explain mostly about the filteration, but his setup is too professional and i see it as "crazy"
if u insist for a frontosa tank, u should get a tank at least 5ft and above, 6x2.5x2.5 is recommended, the best filteration for all this giant tank is to use sump tank, the bigger the sump tank with more partitions, the better the result. now comes to the fish part, to me i dun enjoy to see a group of adult burundi swimming in the tank, they just dun hv any coloration, basically just black and white, strange thing is they hv more blue color during the juv stage. pls make a rite choice of the frontosa u r getting, they can be kept more than 15 years. if u like the kok like flowerhorn, then burundi is ur choice. some good photo gallery of frontosa, mostly the zaire pics: check out the below link and go to the photo gallery section, they hv tons of nice pics of frontosa setup. www.frontosa-forum.com the best tankmate for frontosa is comp/calvus, of course u can add some other african cichlid like malawi cichlid, just carefully choose those non agressive cichlid. |

hahaha...its not crazy...and surely not expensive and everyone can afford them. they are all home made ...remember ...so u need to spend time at the hardware shop. i cannot afford those expensive stuff straight from the FS rack.......a medium 5inch wide skimmer cost abt rm350 to 600, depending on the brand and without powerheads...now this is crazy. but with a little imagination using pvc pipes ,a 6inch wide skimmer could be made for less rm40. the more u make , cost will spread and it will be much cheaper.one thing i would suggest an aqurist to pick up is...to learn the skill of glass cutting. second hand glass is cheap and plentiful in malaysia (rm15 per sq meter for 8mm)..and u could cut and design what ever u had in mind ...saving the expensive ready made aquarium, and seriously...a good aquarist doesnt mean he is only good in keeping fish ...he must be good in imaginations and saving cost. buying ready made stuffs is truly beyond my means with all the tanks i have ...i will go broke

Hehe...not every setup can have sump system leh...like my 4 foot tanks all old old from my dad, no space to put sump...same goes to other tanks I have. So I use sponge filters and modify the overhead filter a bit...works okay for my dad so far. But I do recommend using sump system. I use sump system for my uncle's 4'x2'x2' tank in KL...the tank loaded with full of high quality bio-rings form Germany(taken from my dad since he replaced his in his koi pond with blue jap matting...they cost a bomb though these rings) can take hell of a load. Last time my uncle put in an 8 inch Syns, three 6-7 inch bifas, 4 burundi frontosas(4-7 inch) and 2 plecs, just change water once a week, the fish all grew very fast. Only had to separate all the fish after the bifas paired off(torturing the last bifas) and the Fronts while they were not target of any agrression, the large syns and bifas pair hog all the food and the Fronts started to lag behind in growth. So to feed them properly removed them.
Note: Bifas were put into this setup at 3 inch...kept in this setup for 2 months they doubled their size to 6-7 inch. Last edited by mybirdshit : 21-03-2005 at 08:55 PM. |

hahaha bro nic...instead of having your filters below which is impossible on old old aquarium , u could of course place it by the sides if space permits. oh yes...those ceramic bio rings are truly expensive ...and to fill in all my filters , i would need at least , 50 kilos x 12 setup= 600kilo....waaaah, die la...i would have to go on goreng pisang and kopi-o for at least two years
