Question *Mystic* - Fish Having Fits?

Hey all,
Juss wondering:
Wat would normally cause a fish to have a fit?
Water has not been touched (as in the last week) water is fine, all other fish are fine, all are eating well etc.
No other marks on the fish at all.
Could it be that he was playing silly-buggers wif the other fish and knocked his head on a rock or something?
Or maybe he swallowed a stone?

(Hes a 10cm Girraffe Hap)

There is no other Haps in the tank, but hes grown up wif all the other fish in the tank.
Never been a prob at all in the tank till now?

Also - after his fit - he died. :'(

Hope someone can shed some lite on this?

Cheers and Fankies in Advance!

Cool

A Girraffe Hap? I assume the fish is a Nimbochromis type from Lake Malawi?

Anyway, in any Malawi setup, even though the fish may 'grow' together that doesn't mean they will not be territorial and attack each other when they grow up. That's probably why your Girraffe Hap died.

Also, some fish are known to be easily spooked and could just as easily hit himself/herself on the glass/rock/sand/etc and do fatal damage.

Of course, it is even possible to be a disease of some sort though highly unlikely.

Anyway, keep watch on your other fishes, good luck & happy fishkeeping!

Default

in a fit u mean...shaking its body , with gills open , trying its best to jump out of the tank?

if thats the case...u had the good fortune of watching your fish in its dying act.
theres nothing u could do...things like this do happen.
cichlids do die off without any visiable reasons...if the other fish are uneffected...then just forget this case and carry on.

Unhappy

Hi Ari,
Yes - thats basically it - I thought at first it was juss itching itself on the gravel, as they do sometimes, but he kept going, and juss flipped all around the tank, looked like he was going to burst or something! :'( Its was so sad to watch!
Lasted a minute and then he juss stopped moving - dead - juss like that!

I have had fish die wif no reason/signs before - but never seen one actually die like that!

Is/was he a Giraffe Hap? Hes got a squished up face, not like the photos I have seen of other Haps.

Hi Mystic,

Your (dead) fish was a Nimbochromis Venustus, a Hap cichlid from Lake Malawi. That 'flat looking head' is a deformity, which could have contributed to his 'fit' & subsequent death.

As for other reasons to 'suddenly go jumping around & dying' ... well, it's possibly he was terribly spooked (either due to aggressive tankmates, tank decor/changes, or some other reason).

Sorry about ur loss (but look on the bright side: ur fish rests in peace!)

WOW! Really?
I have bought 3 different ones from 3 different places, and all of them have looked like this one!
Are you telling me they were all deformed!?!

NO WAY! (lol)
I never knew - as I said - they were all the same!

There was no one near his tank, tank is 550L, and no one in the tank is aggressive. There is no pairs in the tank etc either. The house is quiet etc, so it was caused by noise either! He was prolly the most aggressive in the tank! (lol)

Thanx for yur help thou!

Hmm, another 'practice' today is to intentionally deform/stunt a fish's growth ... heck, even intentionally breeding deformed/stunted fish. I've recently seen a batch of deformed/stunted albino Chinese Algae Eaters in a LFS (Local Fish Shop) - personally I'm very sad to see fishes in such a state.

Well, fish have been labelled as "crazy" before (and this does kinda make this hobby enjoyable in an 'evil' kind of way!).

Happy Fishkeeping!

Yer well, If I knew they were deformed, I wouldnt have bought them thats for sure! I still loved them, but if you go buying deformed fish, people will keep breeding them that way cause they will get money for them!

Anyways - I think he was crazy! (lol)
