Hi folks,
More and more I come across this term "deworming the fish" . Some people do it regularly to keep the fish growing. What is deworming? Which exact treatment is used and how often should it be done? Should I do it even if the fish looks normal? Thanks FE |

FE,
Deworming the fish is when you treat your fish with medication that is supposed to kill parasite worms living inside your fish and/or fish tanks. The frequency that you deworm your fish will depend on how often you feed it with food that's not commercially prepared, e.g. treat more if you feed your fish with natural foods compared to feeding with beefheart and treat more if you feed your fish with beefheart compared to feeding with commercially labeled flakes, bits, etc. It's a good practice to treat fish that you have recently bought, i.e. during the quarantine period. I use praziquantel for deworming. The commercially prepared Parasite Clear is also good. I have treated fish that looked "normal" but still had worms. prazi makes the worms muscles spasm so they lose their grip[?] inside the host and get passed out. some get destroyed before the come out.
it's pretty strong stuff. yoda-have you tried using some epsom salt together with prazi? is this recommended btw?

Dear All,
We had a most interesting and rewarding evening meeting Andrew Soh on Monday. Our main subject is of course Discus Keeping and thanks to the generosity of Andrew with his experience, all went away happy to have learn something more about discus keeping. The manner in which Andrew dispense his advise has been very casual and warm. I would say he is quite a charismatic person and its very relaxing talking to him. But when it comes to doing what is right for your fish he is dead serious. On behalf of Chong and Stan, may I put in record our appreciation for you freindliness towards hobbyist like us. We look forward to meeting you whenever you are in KL. Wishing you the very best. Cheers! BT Lee |
