Question

Hi Andrew,

We have heard what baby said about finding nothing in the cavity.
You seemed surprised, I could be wrong, but would you share your experience on this with us too?

Cheers!

it's something we can't see with the naked eye. but just in case, an autopsy is good to find any protozoans that we can actually see. from there a course of action can be done to treat the other fish before it's too late.

Hi Wong,

Stan is right...an autopsy is a must to affirm cause of the bloating.

I am not surprised but whenever an inexperienced person dissect the belly...they seem to find nothing. Pardon me, baby, it is a general comment.

In fact, in most cases, they found something but they consider it as nothing....and that is the fluid flowing out of the cavity. This is already a sign of water retention...and can be due to bacteria or degenerating organs.

But because they see nothing else beside the water (fluid), they think the fluid is natural and thus does not play an important role in the diagnosis....you know what I mean? They expect to see worms crawling around and disappointed when there is none.

Take care,
Andrew

we are all here to share and find new tread. so no need to be sorry.
but with my dissected last time, i only found air, no fluid.but still can't find the right treatment for this disease. so with you 32 exp, what is you suggestion for us to treat this disease? because most of them will died.even we used the internal bacteria medicine. please share with us. thanks

hi andrew,

baby's husband is a surgeon so they did the autopsy together and have concluded as such. i dare say not all cases of bloating are the same cause but it's just good to know how many ways bloating can be caused. in my case, i'd really like to know because my other fish are likely to have same cause...

Hi Guys,

Good to know there is a surgeon around. In all my autopsies, on bloated belly, I observed only two....constipation (where the intestine and/or stomach are swollen) and fluid retention (cause as explained earlier). I have yet to find one with air in the cavity without 'a few drops of fluid' oozing out of the cavity on the first cut. Unfortunately never had once a 100% air-bloating in cavity (not inside intestine). Water retention is most frequent.

For the first - constipation - I suggest magnesium sulphate and heat treatment...if the bloated discus still tries to eat. Adding metronidazole or some antibiotics in the treatment if it is not eating at all.

For the second, I have already suggested in the earlier post...somewhere...but if it is due to feeding color-show to push out the red in Albinos and Leopard snakes ...which tends to damage the liver, resulting in sudden proliferation of bacteria in the cavity (these bacteria also have 'consumed steriod' thus stronger),....usually very hard to recover.....but you can try the method suggested in my book.

Take care buddies,
Andrew
