hi all
read quite a few wrong post of strain in some forums' gallery or sale section.for example i personally think that discus r not suitable to sell while too young especially spotted fish.these strains r having quite a number of throwbacks which should be culled off when they reach to certain size.false selling may cause dissapointment for buyer especially beginer n yet it will spoil the name of breeder as well.it is also some wrong post of sale like; 1" lss for cheap sale,5 cents size super melon for sale.beginers bought them n found out only after 1 or 2 year trying to show off their fishes in the forum.how will they feel?what can they do?i myself were having the same experiance while i started this business n found out fishes were not what i want after sometime.i knew nothing while i bought the fishes with a so call expert friend help.so,who to be blamed?breeder,my friend or myself? what im trying to say is,wasting of money might not be a big problem, but the time, the efforts that ve been paid r the biggest lost n the dissapointments may cause a person to quit the hobby. pool in english, rich in thought (ke-po) forrest |

Agreed that there is no way to tell a fish when it is 50 cents size.
I still recall the definition of a "strain", it at least required a certain percentage of true breeding. Thus I am not certain that we can call a fish a new strain if there there is only 40% or less of true breeding and the rest are hybrid that cannot be name...... I truly urge all to stop naming a new strain until we had at least a F2 with 80% tru breeding.. In this case we will be able to "gurantee" the buyer what he is paying for... and all problem will be solved..right??? |

agree, however exception are some light colour breeds are easier to achieve by breeding intermediates.
eg. two intermediate albinos breeding will produce 25% albinos 25% without albino genes and 50% albino intermediates. reason to breed albino intermediates are that albino parents cannot darken their bodies to attract the fries to stick onto them to feed off their body mucus. so a lesser percentage will survive if you breed two pure albinos. there is also the importance of strenghtening the gene pool by outcrossing with wild fish...this results in a lot of intermediates again...which is dumped into the local market...
