Is PH of 7.4 too high my my 10 gal. tank goldfish? (I am the one who's fish were hanging out in the corner of the tank in a earlier post). They don't do it too much anymore (I hardly turn the light on) and they seem much happier now. But... I tested my water today - nitrites and ammonia levels were perfect but the Ph is 7.4 (maybe even 7.6 - but my test only goes to 7.4)

So... do you think I should bring it down? If yes - has anyone heard of dropping a drop of lemon juice do bring it down?

Thanks!

At 7.4-7.6 your pH is ideal. Don't mess with it. It's not the pH that is causing any problems to your fish. Looks elswhere.... like what sort of ornaments u have, what have you added recently??

fish that hang one corner is gill problem. Not beacuse of High PH. In some pro breeder their PH can go as high as 9. This is still ok. But not below 6 sudden change of water will shock the fish. If people keep goldfish low PH there is a reason behind it.

what kind of a gill problem? Is it serious? treatable? Actually, I have observed them for sometime for a couple of weeks and it looks like they are not doing it any more... do you think whatever they had went away on its own? I may have mentioned that I don't turn the light on anymore (it's a regular light bulb), maybe they were too hot... they seem to be doing ok now though.

Thank you for your input guys!!

Kate

Gill fuke. not so serious if you don't treat it fast. A simple thing to watch out is when it floats. Every fish will have it. Is in their blood line. treat first before turning on the light.

.... errr, and treat with WHAT? U didn't say what to treat with if it's gill flukes.

I'm not too sure if it's gill flukes or not. If it's flukes your fish will have tell tale signs like flashing. It would be rubbing it's gill cover/body on hard surfaces to try remove the irritant. Now if it's already listless and floating, and it's caused by gill flukes, u've let it go on for too long. U should catch it early. Basically, the only sure way to dignose gill flukes is with a microscope.

Treatment for flukes: Dimilin, Trichlorofon (usually this is the active ingredient in Fluke Tablets such as ParaEX by Wardley), or Praziquantel (active ingredient in Droncit).

Check out www.goldfishconnection.com for infomation on medication. It's an American commercial site but it's got good info and Rick Hess (owner of Goldfish Connection) is among the biggest buyers of top quality goldfish from around the world.
