Default How to tell btw Male and Female goldfish?

This is a beginner's question i suppose . My goldfishes (1 ranchu and 1 ryukin) look a bit bored in a 2 ft tank . Want to get them more friends .

is it better to

- get other different species (lion head oranda)
or
- get a partner of the same species for each ?

it depend on what u want such doing an inbreeding ,linebreeding or outcrossing.my advice is don't buy any more fish as 10 gallon is just enough space for the 2 goldies.

hi cool guy, pls goto previous thread http://www.myfishforum.com/thread3210.html
i hope it will help u, but be prepared with extra tanks coz yor tank will get cloudy when male start releasing milk (sperm) then you need to move them to other tank before they get sick.
good luck!!!

You dont have room for any more fish the tank you have, you could consider upgrading?
if they are together they shouldnt be lonely, how are they acting? do you know your water params?

well they are in the spare tank now. i do have a bigger tank that i would like to move them into but i have to give away those other fishes first because they will be bullied and attacked ..

sometimes they just sit at the bottom for a long time so i thought it was not normal. actually since you mentioned it , the water becomes cloudy very fast so i did a partial water change yesterday. I thought it was the pellets but then Hikari pellets shouldn't cloud the water that bad .

what size tanks do you all keep your GF in ?? how many fishes do you all have ?

my bigger tank is 3 ft .

the pH was ok (about low 7 ) but have not checked my other params .

i usually store the water for at least a day before I put it into the tanks .
-a little anti-chlorin, pinch full of aquarium salt (and multivitamin) works fine for my fishes
- feeding twice (morning and evening) a day

hi Chinaryukin

Nice goldie. Actually I like the Japan lionhead Ryukin (bigger bubbly head than the China type ) and Ranchu .

My ranchu passed away suddenly yesterday. It was eating normally in the morning and was dead when I got home. Not sure if it was the water or the food (Hikari) but I changed the water to protect the other fishes . I am not sure why but I will get the water right before I add in new fish.

Thanks.

that's oranda. i like them too especially big size with short body, shorter tail.and big pompons.
but got to be very patient now, coz no space for it, and no good to mix them with ryukin.
