Default Handling Greedy Goldfish

I have a problem here with one of my Orandas. That fella eats like a vacum cleaner. On average 3-5 times faster than the other fish. This causes him to float at times. At first i thought it was swimbladder disease. I seperated him treat him with swimbladder medication and control his diet (with peas every alternate days) After a week or so he goes back sinking. But when i put him back to the big tank with other Orandas the problem starts again. I only feed my Oranda's twice a day with every serving of less than 2 minutes. But he seems to take most of the food. He does not look like a bully fish. The fish just eat too much in a short period.

He too knows that if i see him floating he will be sitting alone in a small tank. Everytime he sees me he will start to swim .When not looking he will just float there tails up and heads down.

Does this mean I have to put this fish alone in a seperate tank forever? Any ideas? Feel pity for him alone. Is it advisable to get a seperater net and get the fish out during feeding times? Any ideas?

I give my father's goldfish duckweed. Now my father picked up on the trick and takes my duckweed to feed his goldfish! There's plenty of the stuff and no real harmful effects for eating too much, just a little extra fiber, vitamins and protein. Feeding too much pellet foods can cause swimbladder problems as the intestinal tracts get clogged up and put pressure on the fragile swimbladder. No real harm in eating too much, just need to make sure they pass it out. It wouldn't benefit them much if all that food they eat don't get digested though. I guess everyone's who's had different types of goldfish would've had this problem but it doesn't do much harm as long as there's enough filtration and variety of foods.

I would either seperate him forever (but thats not the best option as he will get lonely.) or make a divider that you can put in during feeding, or seperate him off someother way during feeding, try not to make it too stressful on him.

lucy is right.. . as i seen the shape on ur fish, the fish hv an in blance feature and this fish should go for a lower water level forever and separated from the rest.

My suggestion is 5 inch high and feed more staple food than high protein food.pls, don't feed him food that contain wheat-germ as the fish is building fat not muscle .built fat is very bad for the fish specially the short body form.hope that help.cheers.

Hmm let him live alone for the rest of his life.. How pityful. Is there any food that acclerates the growth of the length of the fish rather than sideways? Have not feed any wheat germ to the fishes. Just a combination of saki hikari, hikari lionhead, spirulina flakes and bloodworms.

Saki hikari are sinking sticks. Suitable for fish of 3cm and more (as mentioned on the packing) I got my saki hikari from xian leng in seksyen2 shah alam. They are the main distributor for hikari foods. Visit them at their website for more information. www.xianleng.com. Notice that some 88 marine shop also sells that but are very fast selling. As for which types of food for ryukins some are the sifus here might be able to help you.

Talking cheap alternative to duckweed

I had a similar problem with my fish. Try giving the fish frozen peas. Of course, you have to defrost them first, and don't give them to the fish when they're hot because they're stupid enough to eat stuff that will burn them. Also, the fish can't eat them with the skins on. After cooking, gently squeeze the peas out of their shells. Substitute peas for a meal at least once a week. This should prevent your fish's digestive track from getting blocked up, and that's what causes the swim bladder to malfunction. Another thought- good water quality is the key to your fish's overall health. Good luck!
