Default 'Wen' Growth on Ranchus

Hi All,

When I look around the market...in most LFS or pet-stores...it's generally easy to find OK quality ryukins, moors, pearlscales, etc. However, to find a good quality ranchu is far more difficult. Most that are in the market hardly look like ranchu at all. They are elongated, have no wen growth and are generally ugly. These are fish at about 2" in length.

Excuse me as I have limited experience with these fishes and I have got conflicting information regarding the growth of the 'wen'. Fish at these LFS at 2" or less generally have no wen growth. Does the growth occur later...or does it develop at all? I have seen 8" ranchu with no wen growth at all...and a while back I got a batch of ranchu at 1-1 1/2' with superb wen growth. Some LFS owners tell me that the growth comes later...some say that if the fish has no growth at 2"...then it will never develop a wen.

So what's the real story here?

It all depends on the genes of the fish and your keeping skill.

I think most of the wen-less ranchus in LFS r of local breed. Nice thick wen r usually imported.

Where r u located? which LFS do u haunt?

For good quality imported ranchus, check out these places:
1) FengShuiFish, Puchong
2) AmazonImage, Balakong
3) WorldGold, Kepong

Happy searching

Yes...the locally bred ranchus (large scale commercial) are generally hopeless. It's a wonder that they actually pass them of as ranchus.

Thanks for the tip. Will certainly look at the places you mentioned.

On another note...some time back I managed to get my hands on an excellent batch of baby ranchus (1" to 1 1/2" length). Unfortunately due to my inexperience then...all of them were lost. According to the LFS where I got them...this was a batch of surplus fish that were meant to be exported. Also, he informed me that Malaysia exports young goldfish to Thailand, HK & other countries where they are raised in better conditions and then imported back into Malaysia when they are grown.

I dunno if there is any truth to this claim.

The LFS is in Air Panas, Setapak, KL. I forget the name of the shop but it's facing the wet market. Anyways, I also double checked with the owner and he said that that batch was a rare one and does not happen often. I also intend to ask him the next time I go there whether he can get more of them.

Let's see,if we xport to other country and they raised in the better condition. Will they send back to us ? ...while the western country will offer more higer price for the fish.

IMO,
We xport to other country, other country will xport to the other-other country while other-other country will send to world wide....LoL..That's I can think of.Cheers.
