Question my outdoor pond suitable for Ranchu ? ?

Hi all sifus,

I am new in GF, I have a new outdoor pond size is around 12 x 6 x 2 ft filter is 3x3x2ft.
Actually i wanna keep koi but a lot of ppl said is too shallow for koi

My question :-

1) My pond size suitable for Ranchu ... I like those giant breed.
2) My pond start to turn green, I heart ppl said green water good for ranchu is that true ?
3) My Pond located at west will get direct sunlight for 10 hours ? is that ok ?
4) Where can I get ranchu In penang ..I stay in BM. I visit a lot of LSF in penang all their Ranchu not that nice .
5) Can Ranchu keep with tortoise ?? I have one Pig nose turture and a pair of Malaclemys terrapin.

I have attach some photo feel free to comment .... currently still under some final tweaking for the waterfall . hopefully can be done by this weeked.

Hi aro,

I'm no Sifu but since not many respond, let me say my comment:

Very nice and beautiful outdoor pond. But having the tortoise & terrapin in the setup is very risky for any kind of goldfish. Unless you are sure that they are vegetarian.
Direct sunlight is okey as long as you have shaded spot/area where fishes can rest/hide during noon time or whenever it's too hot for them.
If you planning to keep big size (giant) ranchu, make sure not to overcrowd.
Big ranchu are expensive and very risky if you are new to goldfish keeping, I suggest you start with 'hardy' type such as wakin which is very easy type to take care, almost as hardy as the koi.
Green weater is good for yuor goldfish, but you still need to do WC. Exposing them in deep/dense green water for too long will be dangerous.

I hope sifus here can add and advice more. Good luck.

Thanks for ur comment ... I haven't been "racun" on ranchu yet ... currently I keep 10 small wakins in my pond.. The terrapin still in my aquarium ...i don't think I will put it in the pond

BTW the water now is a bit clear .. maybe my filter start to work already ..haha

Default Good luck!!!

Good decision. How small are your wakins, any photos?
I believe giving them enough space + proper feeding, they'll grow big in very short time. They can be 12" within less than a year.

Good luck. Cheers,

Hi All & CR,

I've had my pond for about 4-5 months now and the youngest fish has been with me for 2 months. I have no idea how old each one was when I first got them but I assume that most are less than 6 months old. Since the beginning, I've kept a close watch on their growth rate and I must admit that I am a little disappointed with their progress, especially in terms of their size. If based on wht you mentioned, CR...a growth rate of 1" per month is the norm for a wakin in the first yr...and assuming that fancier breeds grow at half that rate and to half the size, I should be seeing at least 1" of growth in my fastest growing individual/s. However, all have not lived up to that assumption. I have quite good water quality (although I have not tested the parameters) b'cos of my big filter, excellent aeration, constant water change (abt 10-15% water change per day) and I feed them enough. BTW, I have Ryukins, Ranchus, Lionheads, Pom pom, Butterfly/Moor, Bubble-eye, etc.

To Arobm...based on my short experience with the pond, I would be mindful of the following:
1) Possibility of sudden drop in water temperature due to heavy rain (see if 2 ft depth is enough to offset this)
2) Acid rain and effect on water PH (depth and surface area also affect this)
3) Shade for fish to hide in strong sunlight (I can't be sure if 2ft of water is enough to protect the fish).
4) The mixing of a fast swimmers like Wakin with slow swimmers like Ranchus is not advisable
5) In terms of green water, I have to say I haven't managed to cultivate any. Possibly because my filter flow rate is quite high; and I have a healthy wall algae growth (more wall algae=less water algae/less wall algae=more water algae). Like me...you also may also find it difficult to cultivate green water.

Appreciate any feedback! Tks!

Green water is good.Your are lucky coz need not to cultivate it.Once it bloom it will take care your wakin. You will surprised by its colour and size develope by GW.Just maintain the density of the green.

hI Bro junkeatng;

Thanks for your feedback ... i think i can't do anything on the pond size and depth. I think I put more plant for shading. i will put a diy "shaky" system this weekend behind my waterfall hopefully it can help to improve the water quality.

thanks have a nice day
