At the rate at which guppies can and do breed, yes, a 55 gallon is highly recommended.
Get a good internal filter like a Fluval 4+ that won't suck in the fry by accident and keep the tank well planted

If you want to keep the filter on the back of the tank you can get a divider for the tank. It will be hard but put the grown guppys on the side where the water intake pipe is and the babys on the other. The dividers you get for tanks should be a fine mesh or have holes to allow water to still flow threw it but keep the fish sperate.
