Default Guppies all died

I have bought a lot of guppies over the years and many have died for so many reason.I used to buy guppies and mix them with my koi and tilapia.Soon the guppies died assumed eaten (no bodies were found) and then the koi were gone also (demm those large tilapia).I change ponds for my tilapia and bought a new set of koi's.Recently I bought 10 guppies,1 female and 9 male and put them in my new medium size aquarium. For some reason the female died 1st and now there are only left 2 male guppies, the rest have died too.1 of the male guppies have start swimming backward and i assume it will die tomorrow. So I was wondering what might be the cause of this before i restock my guppies. Btw im in cyberjaya.its hot here..nice for those gupies i hope.

P/s: each guppies cost rm1.any1 know where else sells cheaper?

I also stay at Cyberjaya. Bought my guppy from Dengkil ( RM 1- 2 ringgit per pcs) and from Bangi RM 3.00 plus/pcs. Some died and some survive at the beginning and after one month the guppy seem ok. Healthy and kicking. Got 2 fry also. I changed half of the water every week without using the filter or what so ever.

I dont know what happen to your guppy, maybe you select the problem one or unhealthy stock. I only buy guppy when they are many in the shop, if only left a few, i bet they are not the chosen one.

my 2 cents.

AAK

It's either unhealthy stock or unsuitable water condition. Can't help it if it's from unhealthy stock but can't be blame also. Ancestral guppies aka the longkang guppy are quite hardy that's why in some longkang with terrible condition it still thrives. However the aquarium guppy is known more as Fancy Guppy which breed through the years to amplify the colours and features of the guppy. The creation of fancy guppy was through numerous line breeding or loosely known as inbreeding had some major setbacks. Most noticeable is the immune system. Fancy guppy nowadays have very low immune system because of the linebreeding method and also the perfect conditions it was bred in. Therefore, most fancy guppy nowadays require almost the identical conditions which it was produced. Even for experienced breeder (ahem not me) a sudden wipeout/deaths are unaviodable. So please don't be surprise because I've known there are even more diff. species to handle than guppies. (I myself already had about 20 deaths total from last month till now-sometimes it can be frustrating lucklily compensated by about 30 fries and 3 adult left). Well for RM 1 apiece the LFS guppy is quite cheap. In this forum you might have noticed some of the sifus paid top dollars up to few hundred for a pair. Even in KL the standard LFS guppy costs about RM1.50 apiece. So Happy Guppying!!!!

first of all new here not sure what lfs presents or what it means but from what i know... i usually bought guppies from pet shops and breed them in a separate tank and later on i separate the fries from the parents and never mix the parents and the grown up fries back together.Usually the parents died in like 5mths later but seems the fries manage to extend their life more than a years old. There was once i bought 4 pairs of guppies and in the end left one only. But quite a miracle that till now dat only one male guppy is still alive and it is 1 and a half years old.Not sure why it can live that long. One thing is that the aquarium is in my room which is air conditioned .I guess that is why that little fella is still swimming lively around my fish tanks instead of being flushed into the wc.

Well the documented lifespan of a guppy is 1-3 years old. So it depends on the environment it's living in and the type of strain. One interesting note though. Guppies seemed to have shorter lifespan in warmer waters and longer life in colder waters. Strange huh but that's documented. So what does this mean, guppies have shorter lifespan in the equator countries i.e Malaysia.

today another one died and "he" got stuck at the filter with its mouth opened and some strange liquid stuck around his mouth.White gewwy stuff i dunno what.Maybe its the caused of death? But the other male guppy is doing fine and thriving. Now only 1 guppy left in the aquarium. Wondering whether its worth the time to keep em since they die so soon and havent breed yet..

Galactuz, I am totally agreed with you and impressed with your Guppy Knowlegde... Guppy lifespan is depend on environment, tempreature, food & etc... but beside these issue, gene also very important...

i realize now that the lack of air pump might be the reason because i only rely on the water filter to give oxygen to them.Today will be buying an air pump for the aquarium and see how things goes.

P/S: 2 more female guppy died

well a little knowledge i can provide about keeping guppies.. Most of the vendors says u can keep guppies without air pump.I disagree with that.It actually depends on the size of ur aquarium. If u are having a deep tank , it is advisable to have an air pump.It is not that guppy dont need oxygen to breath in, but they get their oxygen by swimming to the top.So juz imagine that it have to swim up to get some oxygen and then down.By doing their rather frequently, it will be rather exhausting.
