Default How many fish at a time

Hi all,
I am currently cycling my first tank (small 5 gal hex with filter light etc.) and am thinking of eventually putting in maybe 6 small tetra. (surface area of water about 99 square inches) Having read everything i can lay my hands on in relation to first setup, i have a question: If i get Tetra's that apparently should be kept in groups of about 6 or more, and i should not add too many fish at a time in a new tank, how many should i add initially?
Many thanks in advance for any advice.
