I just bought a new aquarium. I have in there a pair of male guppies and a few other fish. It seems my two guppies tend to attack one of my fish while leaving the others. Are they territorial or aggressive? I feed them daily, could they still be hungry? I don't want to add any females and the tank hasn't fully cycled yet.

sounds to me like you have the correct choice of compatible fish...perhaps it could be that the tank is just too small for them...you have any plants for cover??? maybe that will help...or perhaps it could be that the tank hasn't fully cycled yet...but if I were you I would try to add some plant for cover...and plus, plants will help to speed up the cycling of the tank...

I have three plants that the attacked fish stays in. He is a platy. He's doing better, but now the guppy has decided to attack one of my mollies. He's a big one so I'm worried what will happen if he fights back. The tank probably hasn't cycled yet. So far, out of my fish he's the only aggressive one... he kinda sneaks up on the other fish, then starts nipping them. The only time I've ever seen any of the others being aggressive is when I put some lettuce in there for my algae eater. The 2 mollies liked it, but my big one wasn't about to share "his" food with the guppies. Would I have the same problem on space if I took out the 2 guppies and put in another platy?

And if even after that, you're still having the same problem...well, maybe, just maybe the guppy is a delinquent. And personally I would placed such fish into solitary confinement...hehehehehe...for a while at least Hopefully, by the time he had done his time and placed back into the tank with the other fish, there would already be a shift of hierarchy and he may find that he is no longer the king of the tank. |

Please help!
I have four male guppies in a 5 gallon tank. I started with one, added another about three weeks later, then added the last two about a week after that and now I am having a problem with one of the last two that I added. He is nipping all of my other guppies! One of them is missing half of a tail now and I watched him tonight try to nip at his eyes. So I removed the aggressive guppy from the tank. What do I do now? Is he going to stop? Is this normal? Will my other guppies tail grow back? Please help me! |

Looks like you have big problem, once yr guppies tails are bitten, it takes a long while to grow. You have to make sure that medication is given so that there's no secondary infection from the wound. If no precautions are taken, then yr fish will die in a matter of days.
Your platy sounds like the victim but I also suspect he's not in good health which could be why yr guppy attacks only it. Guppies are usually very docile fish, frisky yes, but not to the point of aggression. Suggestion would be to medicate yr whole tank with natural remedy Melafix for 7 days (this helps with the tail and fin rot) to help yr fish grow back the tail. Prior to medication, do a 50% water change and take ALL yr fish out into a bucket filled with aquarium water. After the water change, dump them all back in the tank (its a tip I learnt that seems to help with aggression for oldies and newbies). Start medicating. Hopefully in 7 days, you'll see improvement on the tail as well as a friendlier environment in yr tank. |
