I know nothing about fish, aquariums, etc.
I went to Walmart this week to get a small aquarium and some fish for my son. I purchased a 6.3Litre (approximately 1.5 gallons??) hexagon tank that came with a light, air pump, tubing and air stone. There is no filter but the bottom of the tank has a slotted raised piece of plastic that we put rocks on top of. I was told the tank could hold about 5 small fish. So we purchased 1 black molly and 2 platies. I went back today to get a pleco. Here's what's happening (and my questions)... The molly was quite aggressive at first and I think took a nip out of 2 fins on one of the platies. The tank was just set up about 3 days ago. I put some Aquasafe in the tank before putting the fish in. We have been feeding very small amounts of fish flakes. Now, the tank is a bit cloudy (so I put some "water clear" solution in today), I think the Molly has the "shimmies", so I added some sea salt today. Also, from reading in this forum, it sounds like my platies have "gill flukes"...so I guess I'll have to get some fluke tablets now too. This was just supposed to be a small start for my son, but it seems to be getting quite complicated!! Are there too many fish for this size tank? What should I do about filtering...I don't think filters normally come with small tanks like this (or goldfish bowls for that matter), so how do we keep it clean? We are on well water, so don't have to worry about chlorine or other chemicals in our water (it is completely untreated). I'm not sure what to do without spending a lot more money for a bigger tank with a filter. Any suggestions or help would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks. Donna |
