Arrow Is it difficult to cultivate live daphnia?

I once washed a month-old cannister filter and it really stank of ammonia. I kept this dirty water in a bucket and I dumped some water lettuce to see if the plants would fatten up. Few days later, I noticed some really minute creatures swimming around. It's daphnia. I remember when I was a kid and I could occasionnally buy daphnia back in my hometown (Malacca)... I could even collect from the flooded pigsty (which was converted into a duck pond during the rainy seasons)... but it was also full of other (dangerous?) organisms. Anyways, am thinking of cultivating my own daphnia coz my baby guppies seem rather stunted in size. Is it possible to raise daphnia? All I need is green water yes? And where can I buy these water fleas? Never saw any in my countless visits to the lfs in KL.

I've tried cultvating daphnia with green water and the result is very very discouraging. I've heard population crash but in my case there's not even a population to begin with I can only have a few swimming here and there but barely sufficient for feeding......

There's actually a secret ingredient to it but I hardly can get but even if I can I doubt I would want to lay my hands on it.......

I don't think daphnia can be cultivated, their lifespan is simply too short. I have never been successful in keeping them alive more than 3 days.

Is the 'secret ingredient' mentioned in the excellent article at the link below?

Live Daphnia is available in Kok Aquarium and that little shop in Sg. Way (dunno the name) the row of shops along the famous Sg. Way Bah Kut Teh behind the Indian temple.

I have not tried cultivating but they are really really smelly to begin with so I don't think anyone with a sensitive nose can really adhere to it.

I've read before the ingredients mentioned in the article but never tried before just because I'm lazy :P

Anyway the secret ingredient vouch be many of my previous generation of fish breeders were not mentioned mainly because it is not hygienic and may pose health risks.

OK Let me break the news. It's COW DUNG. With this you don't have to even get a starter culture as it was claimed (not by me) to contain daphnia cysts than will hatch once the S.H.I.T is mixed with water and exposed to sunlight for a few days. So if you have a garden not paved, you can dig a ditch a dump all your Cow S.H.I.T inside and mixed with some water, stir well, wait a couple of days Walla a colony of daphnia.

I'm hearing alot of eeeuuuuwwww but guess where the daphnia you bought came from anyway

So anyone is up to it can give it a try but not me. I might be slaughtered by my family for bringing some shit home......

Thanks for that link Ruslan. Looks to be the most useful link on daphnia cultivation so far. However, any of you forumers actually had success cultivating these creatures?
