Default Help! My tank is being overun by snails!

sorry for the wee bit of exageration

i have a very small tank which contains 2 java fern, 2 guppies and 1 lily gourami..
at first i only notice 2 very small snails (about 4mm in length).. but today i counted and there is now 7 of them! 2 of them have grown double in length to 8mm! i guess the snails came with my fern by hitchhiking..
now i dont mind their presence at first, but after the death of 2 of my guppies i am beginning to doubt whether their presence could caused the death of my guppies..

can anyone provide me a name for this snails so i could search for more info on the net?

tq..

This type of snail are quite harmless, they don't damage plants.
(Although some other snails and caterpillars also hitchhike AND eat plants.)

But they are quite annoying because they multiply very fast.
You don't have too many, so you don't need to add their predators like loaches.
Just start by picking them up by hand whenever you find them going up the glass.
Don't crush them; some people got infected from doing that.

Only if you do not have any shrimps in the tank. Any fish that eats snails will do the same for shrimps.

Cheers,

I'm not sure on that one. You could take the snails out by hand or with a net.

I have those snails too in my nursery tank i put outside. Cleared up algae really good. Though I don't like them for doing that, the algae was supposed to be for my mollies and their offspring. My father keeps a rather large flower horn so I catch a bunch of snails with a net (snails are too gross for me to pick up with bare hands) and i feed them to the flower horn. Free live food supply . And they seem quite harmless to plants, i've a bunch of elodea and vallis in tha tank and they don't seem to be very much bothered by the snails.
