No wonder cannot find lah on the net... hahaha.... people these days will do anything to make people buy stuff.
In pet safari, they call Australian Red Claw by Exotic blue. Then Louisiana Crayfish they call Malboro red.... auyoh, all misleading. The only think they got correct are the Australian Marron and Tiger Zebra. |

What to do? our lfs don't have the proper knowledge and skill. I was once in Pet xxxxxx in tmn megah. One of their staff asking an auntie to put coral sand n crash coral inside planted tank as gravel. I was tot i heard something wrong...thinking of may be he is talking about marine tank. so...i just follow beshind n trying to be 8...
Found out..he said..put the base fert. then put coral sand. After that, coral chips!!!! I was shock...and went up n saw the manager. Told the manager about that. The manager said sorry..he is a new guy. Damn...they allow a new guy who dont have exp in planted tank to handle with customer. kinda sad ya. |

Coral sand and crushed coral in a planted tank? That is plain wrong!!!! I think majority of people employed at petshops and fish shops have little knowledge. But manager should be aware that these little knowledge people should never give advice.
Same in ikano, the pet shop there dunno anything about crayfish.... and was quite shock to see the hermit crabs housed in a tank with pebbles and fresh water. Hermits need sand or crushed coral(pebbles hurt them) and only a bowl of fresh water and a bowl of salt water. Well, the staff didn't say anything about their care to me but luckily I did my reading. I bet most hermit crabs that were bought had died due to inproper housing and food. BTW Dom, how you house your crayfish? What substrate? My crayfish dug out my pants and clipped up the roots.... so planning to buy some fake ones soon. |

Guyz, I've seen worse things in pet stores I've been to in KL. People just want da MONEY. I was there to buy a crayfish...and then this girl attended to me and out of curiosity I decided to test her knowledge, so I ask her how to take care of them. Wat she told me: feed the crayfish with kangkong, and keep a bit of water only and not too much coz it will drown the crayfish....

hermit crabs do survive in brackish water which is 35-40ppm. Normally it can be found in the stream which near to the sea side.
I house my cray in the 6ft tank with rocks and fine sand. Cray fish do like strong water flow. Especially the Australia Blue do survive in temp of 10-16C and fast flow river. And they breed only in low temp. But those from farm is not hard to breed. All you need is a chiller to chill the temp around 20C. crazymouse....where you house the cray is not recommended to keep any aquatic plants. I can said all cray do dig. No matter your plants r real or fake. And it will keep you busy to plant it back. Do some research online. You will see those home breeder keeping cray in plastic container. They keeping 1 container each. All seperated. Check out http://www.bluecrayfish.com and http://iz.carnegiemnh.org/crayfish/phpbb2/index.php |

Ohhh... brackish water? Hmm... ok, that is something new to me since some hermit owners didn't tell me that.
Ahhh... I see.... I found out the LFS near my place breeds yabbies and australian red claw.... all he puts inside are drift wood and that's it. No chiller..... amazing they can breed. Ohhh... now I understand about the plants. Coz I read some websites put some plants or fake plants coz it helps them in hunting their food. Yups, now mine all in single tanks. One of the small ones I house in a small tank temporarily coz my aquarium isn't ready yet. |
