Apple snail could live up to 10 years! And their size could go up to size of baseball! Its all depend on our caring.

The more we feed, then faster they grow and larger in size, but bear in mind, this also mean their live span also shorter. The more time they mate, the shorter their live span too.

My apple snail too up about 4 month with full time eating to get into this size. But now I m slowing down since after they have mate successfuly. Currently in my tank, I have bout 40 babies snail. Pretty small size, just bout 0.5 cm size.

They will eat anything, event dead fish and dead snail! What we put in the tank, they will go for it..as long as it is eatable.

At the beginning, i feed them vegetable, green one. But those un-eaten will spoild and cloud the water, event make a very terrible smell. So I then turn into live water plant and for sure live plant are more expensive! But with life plant, your water are clearer and less smell. Once a while I will feed them will green vegetable, especially spanish, because snail need to get source of calcium for their shell.

I also include small fish and shrimp in my tank. For those un eaten food and worms (tube worm or lava).

If any of you guys ever remember, there is a break-out case in Malaysia regarding to apple snail. Seem like they could destroy crop, padi fields, and consider to be a great pest!

If not mistaken, MARDI also band on this species to be breed need padi area.

From what I can remember, bout few years back, a business went traveling and found out apple snail is a delicate meal in few country such as France and Japan. They pay a high price for it. Search through the internet, apple snail in restaurant can go up to US $3.00 each! So this businessman research on this snail and bring it over to Malaysia. The type he bring is normal apple snail, grey/ dark coco in color. Apple snail breed fast went they got TOO MUCH food and high temperature, also fresh water. So the best place will be somewhere near river, and guest where. This businessman has his snail farm upstream river above padi fields! For few month this guy earn alot as apple snail breed alot. But his careless, some of the baby snail escape and follow through the river to the padi fields and start to destroy.

The next thing I know was this guy business is force to close down. Some country do not allow you to import apple snail.

Well, I was lucky to get hold 2 of it, golden apple snail some more. And now they breed, lay and hatch. So need to take carefully, else will be come another outbreak...hehhehee...

Apple snail have alot of variety and I m still looking for more. Normal apple snail are easy to keep, golden apple snail is bit hard. I got it from one of LFS in Penang. I revisted his shop last few week, to see if I can get hold more snail. To my surpise, the owner told me all his golden apple snail die! What a waste, he say not easy to take care loh.

I m not sure wether you can get it in KL or not. Sorry.

Hi Flash bro,

I once have these gold snail in my fish tank. The eggs are white not red compare to the species of your snail. The meat is nice, you can have them at Lok Lok stall. In restaurant, they skewed it like satay, roasted in honey barbecue sauce.

I have one question, how long can an apple snail survive outside water?
my apple snail is sharing a tank with my turtle, once the snail accidently climbed onto the basking area. By the time i realized this, he was not moving and who knows how long he has been there. i then put him back in the water. it didnt move a muscle for one whole day. i thought that it died, but then suddenly it moved.. after more than a day

hi sayasebuk....what kind of apple snail u have it over there?

By what i read over in the internet, apple snail can survive for up to 1 weeks without water! Thats is how they able to ship it around. Thats really amazing.

Actually alot of snail can survive without water for couple of hours, they will usually stay in their shell, and once the water is there, they will come out and play.
