well im not really sure how long
but i used to go to the aquarium shop n choose those pregnant ones
once i get them, i seperate them n put lots of plants
den some will give birth in a few hours
some in a few days
when its really big n u can see the dark spot
den it should be soon
i used to seperate n put a female per location
but recently, i put all the pregnant females in a bigger place, put lots of plants and it was okay
they dint eat them up or anything
the fries have grown
its big now
but i cannot guarantee the females will not eat them
n once u have ALREADY seperated them n they gave birth, never put the fry with another fish coz they will definitely eat them....

Hi, swordtails usually will have their fry ( babies ) in about 28 days, but I have had some go as long as 40 days.
The best thing in opinion is to buy a breeder box, which allows the fry to fall through and not be eaten by the female. Breeder containers are pretty cheap, less then $ 10.00 I think. Good Luck. Jim

Default Put grass like elodea

Hi there,

Based on my experience, I will put the female in a dark and heavily covered by the aquatic grass (such as elodea) which can be retrieve from some drain or pond. But normally, most of them will survive at birth. But not all of them will grow up to adulthood. Again, its trial and error business. I only manage to get 8 from the first brood 10 years ago. After that more and more once I got the experience.

Regards
