Question New Marine Tank

Hi All

I just setup my new marine tank yesterday and am a complete newbie on raising salt water fish. This is what I currently have (sorry as I'm not too sure on the correct jargon)

1. Fish Tank - 2' x 1' x 1' (more or less)
2. Sand Bed
3. Live Rock (1 large and 2 smaller, formed an arch with it - covers most of the middle of the aquarium already)
4. 2kg Salt (Red Sea)
5. Lamp
6. Filter (Sits on top of the aquarium type and using 3 layers of sponge)
7. Bacteria (quarter cap)
8. NO2 Test Kit (not used yet)
9. Hydrometer

As of this morning, the water is quite clear already and the hydrometer reads that my salt level is in the green.

Was just wondering:

1. With this setup how long do I need to cycle the water before adding in some fish? Which type of fish is good for starters?
2. Am I missing anything else that is needed?
3. With this setup can I also start adding corals?
4. If so, should I add corals or fish first?

Thank You

Talking hi

i cycled mine about 4 year ago for about 6 -7 weeks i then added when water paramiters were nearly just write add two damsels (everyone on all salt water forums will say its cruel but they all did it) as they are hardy fish but the worst to keep as there bullys once tanks okay and bacteria built up exchange for other fish that are hardy but not aggresive jobs a good one ... keep on top of things and yav cracked it..

not sure how long it takes to make a good cycle of marine aquarium
mine is also 2x1x1
I only cycle it for 1 day ( adding water, salt, PH up, set up the filter )
then I add fish on the very next day

the first fish I add is the ocellaris clown fish (it was only 2 cm when I had them)
even though it's small it's a very strong compare to the others

oh ya btw mine is fish only no corals or sands

Depend on ur water condition, salinity level, PH, NO2, Ammonia, KH

RO water, filtered water, tap water? do you add JBL Denitrol, anti chlorine, or any destress solution.

What type of salt?

Do u have PH tester, why do u put PH up?

What kind of filter, a hang on? canister filter, or sump tank?

You did not mention whether you've also include liverock, these are essential for marine fish.

How about a skimmer? all saltwater fish require a skimmer, in my case i used a Rio Nano skimmer modified with JBL filtration.

tap water mixed with salt + anti chlorine
I also use the salt meter to check the salinity level

unfortunately it's the red sea brand salt

top filter inside got sponge, bio pores and carbon

2x1x1 is too small to use sump

AA515 well it's not the best
but my fish still survive

I saw in the ocean blue display
they have the 2x1x2 fish only and they don't use any skimmer just hang-on filter

What is your current water parameter

PH ?
KH ?
NO2 ?
Ammonia ?
Salinity Level (Salt content) ?

You don't have a skimmer? You don't have a liverock? These two are important for long term. If you only rely the filter, it is not enough, at least put some liverock inside your tank.

Any picture of your tank?

For coral without a chiller, there is no guarantee it can survive for long. I think there are a type of anemone not require cool temperature, just require bright lighting and good water parameter. It cost RM 10 only.

Salt content is 1.022 - 1.023

PH level is around 8.0 - 8.5
max PH up mixed with water is around that,
I have tried before and it can't reach 9

KH is related to PH, if you increase the KH it will eventually increase PH

Amonia n NO2 don't have

Look at mine

YouTube - Beginner Nano tank by JN23 part 2

I'm using a filter and RIO nano skimmer

This is the salt i used

I would like to advise you, put a black background, also adding a chunk of liverock, with some sand.

If the water is blurred it has nothing to do with the salt, it means your filtration system is not good enough to recycle back cleaner water. What kind of filtration product you used. Try switching to JBL filtration products.

By the way, you also need a powerhead, actually i think it will help you to dissolve some of the water.

RO water is the best.

Even without a skimmer, your water quality should be like tis.
