I would say yes that they can live without a filter depending on what size of tank you are going to be putting them in. You will however need to have some sort of surface agitation so that the water will stay oxygenated. If the tank is not cycled then you will have to perform small waterchanges to keep the ammonia leves down so that the fish do not die. The disadvantage of this is that the beneficial bacteria will take longer to form, and the colony will not be as large as what it would be if you were not doing the water changes. Cycling with small water changes also takes alot longer.
Currently I only have one tank, other than my saltwater tank that has a filter on it. I take that back, they all have filters on them, but I dont use any filter media, I just use them to cirrculate water and for surface agitation. The only time that I throw in filter media, activated carbon, is when I need to remove meds from the water. I have only had to use meds one time, so other than that week that I had the carbon in that one tank mine have been running with basically no filter at all.

Also you will probably have to perform more water changes untill the tank has been running a while and the bacterial colonies are well taken. That is another disadvantage of not using filter media.......lower numbers of benificial bacteria....but probably only for the first couple months of the tanks life. I test my water every other week, and I havent performed any water changes or any other type of maint. on my FW tanks, except adding fertilizer for the plants in almost 3 months.

rick, depending on where you are located at you can find some pretty good deals online. If you are in the US or Canada then I suggest that you look at www.bigalsonline.com. They have great prices on filters. Have a look at the Marineland Emporer bio -wheels, and also the Marineland Penguin bio - wheels. In my opinion they are the best Hand on back filter out there.

You ought to use filtration and not just oxygenate the water as you know our style of fishkeeping, we don't spend that much time in regular enough water changes which is detrimental to yr fish health if you do not use a filter. Any type will do, top filter, under gravel, canister, hang on so long as there's media to absorb waste (filter wool), bad smells (activated carbon) and beneficial bacteria (bio rings).

As for mollies, the females are usually larger with a more rotund belly.

Mollies, guppies, swordtails all belong to the livebearer group which is an excellent place to start for beginners.
