Hi fren, Good water must achieve the following condition:
- Ammonia 0
- Nitrit(NO2) 0
- Nitrate(NO3) <90 ppm for fresh water / <10 ppm for marine tank
- PH 6.8 (fsh water)
- kH 70 ppm (fresh water)
- gH 110 ppm (fresh water)
- Temperature 79 to 82 ferenheit ( 27 to 28 C)
This is a general guideline for freshwater aquarium however for marine tank u will have a different pH, salinity, NO3, gH and etc. Some marine expert may give u detail info.
Extra Tips: Do not ad many fish when the tank is cycling.
Change 30% of water every week with conditioned water.(Let the new water stay in an open storage pail for at least 1 day with a good water conditioner, this is to disperse the unwanted gas and chroline.Alternatively you can put a small internal filter in the pail with a good activated carbon to filter the unwanted sediment and heavy metals. You will use this water for top-up and every water change.

Happy FISHKEEPING !!

Red face newbie to salt water

Hi,

I am new to salt water aquarium, but been keeping fresh water fish almost 20 years now. Need the challenge I guess. I am thinking of starting a salt water fish aquarium (as recommended by the things I read on the internet) first before getting into corals and anemones (if the interest is still there). Been to 88 in pandan indah bought salts, test kits (hygrometer, Ph, NO2, NO3)( never use them in fresh water but still OK - maybe salt water a little different eh!) and filter media. On checking the site for a 4 footer (48 in x 18 in x 18 in) aquarium I need about 8 kg of salts, but 88 only suggested about 7.67 kg of salts, is it enough?. Been checking on fish food so far, not found any in the forum, so what kind of food to feed the fish such as damsels for starter? Fresh water fish food is it enough, such as Tetras or Sera. Thanks
