refugium is just another tank isolated from yr main tank which ppl put a remote sand bed to grow macroalgae. the purpose of having one is to help in the reduction of nutrients like NO3 n PO4. it oso provides a place for pods to grow but for that to be effective, the refugium needs to be higher than display cos if below, pods wud most probably be dead after travelling thru the return pump.
point to note, for nutrients export,to be worthwhile, the refugium needs to be fairly large.use to be quite popular but most have abandon the idea and gone for better protein skimmers instead.
